Notes on Palaearctic Cryptophagidae (Coleoptera), including lectotype designations and new synonyms

During work on a new Palaearctic catalogue of Cryptophagidae, many problems have been found in the old Palaearctic (Winkler, 1926) and world (Schenkling, 1923) catalogues, as well as in subsequent works. Neither Winkler nor Schenkling list any Gistelnames, whose collection is considered lost (Gerhard Scherer, pers. comm., 13.vi.1994). Nevertheless, by studying Gistel's original descriptions and with a thorough knowledge of present day faunas in the areas in which he collected, interpretation of hisand other taxa is possible. The present author has studied many types of Atomariinae in the past and the results of these studies are also incorporated below. Relevant species are those that require changes in status, synonymy, confirmation of identity or synonymy, as a result of increased knowledge of species, especially those described in recent years. Much new synonymy has already been given in the key to central European species (Johnson, 1992) and lectotypes relating to that and other works are designated below, where necessary. Many new synonymies based on studies of Cryptophaginae types by myself will also appear in the introductory part of the new catalogue. Arrangement of higher taxa follows Leschen (1996). Nomenclatural acts are in agreementwith the fourth edition of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (I.C.Z.N., 1999). Recent information (Otto Merkl & Ivan Lobl, pers. comm.) shows that Reitter's Bestimmungs-Tabellen was not published in 1887 as all other catalogues indicate,but in the following year (Reitter, 1888). Although this date change affects over 40 specific names, it does not change any on the grounds of priority.
