The biology of Scoparia basistrigalis Knaggs, 1866 (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

We believe that, hitherto, the larva of Scoparia basistrigalis Knaggs, 1866, has not been described, either in the British Isles or mainland Europe. Larvae were found in 2003 and 2004 amongst Mnium hornum Hedw., a moss occurring on lime-free soil, rocks and tree roots, and one moth was reared. Bower (1895: 273-274), in a note on this species, states 'Hitherto efforts to obtain larvae of this moth have been fruitless and I think that I have proved it not to be a moss-feeder, as the experiment of placing a number of females in pots of growing moss, resulted in complete failure; whereas S. crataegalis and 5. mercurella so treated, breed freely.'
