EPA Asked for Severe Penalties on Explosions at Formosa Plastics Plant

The EPA stated that at the time of the accident, the Yunlin EPB personnel stationed in Mailiao immediately began investigating the accident and collecting air samples downwind of the plant. The EPA Toxic Disaster Emergency Response Team received a report from the Yunlin County Fire Department at 8:31 pm on the evening of the accident, upon which it immediately departed for the site to make an initial assessment of the situation and determined that it was not a toxic accident. The Yunlin EPB issued a request for assistance at 12:50 am, and the Toxic Disaster Emergency Response Team began monitoring and sampling at 1:59 am, Initial measurements revealed 1.4 ppm methyl styrene and 1.3 pprn toluene, both of which were under the tolerance standard of 50 ppm for harmful substance concentrations in workplace air. The Yunlin EPB also took samples and expects to have analysis results within a week. The results will help determine pollution and air quality, and will serve as a basis for issuing penalties.
