The substantive and scientific life of Dr Mostafa K. Tolba is well known and documented.1 While science-driven, he worked on turning science around to create environmental principles, both binding and soft-law. He was a leader and companion of environmental lawyers and policy makers. He left an enduring legacy in science, diplomacy, law and policy. In this brief description of my experiences with him, I focus on the human and humble side that may not be known or obvious to many. 1 therefore detail aspects of my time as an officer working with him for many years.
