In a study at Tripura, north-east India, 2247 winged aphids belonging to 17 species were collected in two water traps that were operated for 12 months. Species of subfamily Aphidinae dominated the collection and Aphis spiraecola ranked first in abundance. Three species of agricultural importance namely, Aphis craccivora, Lipaphis pseudobrassicae and A. gossypii ranked second, third and fourth, respectively, based on their relative abundance. Winged morph of aphid species known to feed on wild plantsand forest trees were less preponderant. Importance of water traps in monitoring the aphid population of crop infesting species is discussed.
