Citation of the contents of The Fruhstorfer Collection of Butterflies: Catalogue of Types with general account and List of the more interesting forms published in the 1920s

Contents of a little-known publication, The Fruhstorfer Collection of Butterflies: Catalogue of Types with general account and List of the more interesting forms, are discussed. The catalogue carries no formal details of author, editor, or date of publication and has been differently cited by various authors and in international library catalogues. The year of publication is usually cited as 1922; evidence is presented to suggest that publication is very unlikely to have been prior to May 1923. The catalogue contains a large number of manuscript names of Palaearctic, Oriental and Neotropical butterflies which have been attributed, almost without exception, by authors to the German entomologist Ludwig Martin. Evidence is presented to suggest that Martin made little, if any, contribution to the catalogue and that the bulk of the contents were prepared by George Talbot, at that time Curator of the Hill Museum, Witley, Surrey. Suggestions are made regarding appropriate citation of the catalogue and its contents.
