A remarkable new genus of the Oodini subtribe Sphaerodina Jeannel, 1949 from the Oriental Region (Coleoptera, Carabidae)

The genus Trichopalpoodes n. gen. with the type species Trichopalpoodes hiekei n. sp. (type locality: Uthai Thani, Thailand), is described from South-East Asia. Diagnostic features of the new genus and species are figured and the distribution is mapped. In order to determine the systematic position of the new genus within Oodini, diagnostic character states are discussed, and four remarkable autapomorphies are identified: i) ventral lobe of stipe, maxillary palpomeres 2-3, mentum, submentum and gula,each coarsely punctured and with some long setae; ii) maxillary palpomere 3 markedly elongate, nearly twice as long as palpomere 4; iii) glossal sclerite both reclinate and apically trifid; iv) elytron apically with a finer and narrower secondary ridgesurrounded by apical stria and marginal gutter. An additional character of Trichopalpoodes n. gen. is unique within Oodini but is supposedly plesiomorphic: integument partially covered with short and scattered setae. As a result, Trichopalpoodes is classified as an isolated taxon within the pan-tropical Sphaerodina.
