Since the early 1970s, the number of satellites deployed for remote sensing purposes has steadily increased. This has followed the increasing capability of robust sensor technology to deliver high-resolution images across a wide area of the electromagnetic spectrum, coupled with the development of intelligent information processing. These developments are opening up a broad range of applications, from monitoring trends in agricultural and urban land usage, to atmospheric and climate change studies, through to use in mineral, oil and gas resources exploration.
