A project of the size and scope of the Christchurch rebuild needs solid systems backing up the work on the ground. SCIRT's innovative business processes, built from scratch by a team under intense pressure, have stood the test of time. The scale of Christchurch's infrastructure rebuild has led to a new way of operating for many organisations and the development of some innovative alliances and systems. So far, it's been a successful undertaking. The responsibility for managing this enormous task lies with the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SORT), whose robust business organisation and systems demonstrates industry best practice. Business Systems Manager Richard Wesley, who is on secondment from Australian engineering consultancy firm Coffey International Ltd, says it has widespread possibilities for other applications. "We pretty much started with a blank sheet of paper in terms of processes and business systems, and there were some advantages to that because we didn't have legacy issues to deal with," he says. "But having said that, you also have nothing to work with and everything had to be created from scratch, and in our case pretty much straight off the bat.
