Design of Los Angeles's Marmion Way Corridor Light Rail Transitway

The Marmion Way Corridor portion of the Metro Gold Line Light Rail Transit Project is unique.It is part of the City of Los Angeles's Historic Preservation Overlay Zone within the residential Highland Park neighborhood.Highland Park is centrally located within a larger northeastern portion of Los Angeles that has a population of 300,000,of whom approximately 40% are living at or below poverty level.Through the late 19908,Marmion Way featured several prominent characteristics(see Figure 1).These included(1)a single-track,freight rail line;(2)nearly 60 homes that were built during the railroad's heyday about a century ago;and(3)a relatively narrow public right-of-way of 60 feet.The residential structures were originally built for railroad workers.These homes are undersized,with minimal setbacks from the public right-of-way.
