DASYHELEA (DASYHELEA) SAXICOLA (EDWARDS) (DIPTERA: CERATOPOGONIDAE) NEW TO IRELAND AND WALES FROM LIMESTONE ROCKPOOLS WITH A REVIEW OF ITS ECOLOGY AND DISTRIBUTION

Intermittently, when visiting limestone areas in Ireland, the two senior authors (PA & JPOC) have searched for Dasyhelea (Dasyhelea) saxicola (Edwards), which is known to be associated with rainwater solution hollows or rockpools in limestone. The search was unsuccessful until 2002 when the species was discovered developing in small rainwater pools on limestone pavement in the west of Ireland. A review of the European distribution of D. saxicola shows that it is primarily recorded from rainwater solution hollows or rockpools on limestone rock. These rockpools may occur on limestone pavement in karst areas and on exposed weathered limestone bedrock. Recently published synonymies show that the species also occurs in non-limestone rockpools and in someman-made habitats. Dasyhelea saxicola is recorded for the first time from Ireland and Wales and a recently published synonym and a misidentification shows that it is also new to Bulgaria and Croatia. The species is now known with certainty from Algeria,Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Russia and Wales. Published records from the Netherlands and Switzerland are unconfirmed. Some additional synonyms of saxicola are givenincluding Dasyhelea dufouri var. montana Zilahi-Sebess, syn nov.
