A note on the early stages of Udea uliginosalis (Stephens, 1834) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

It was not until 2006 that the larva of Udea uliginosalis (Stephens, 1834) was found in the wild in the British Isles and only a brief description was published. Before this, British accounts of the larva and foodplant(s) were based on continental European sources, although the ovum of what was almost certainly this species was described in the British literature as long ago as 1901. In 2004 and 2009 ova were obtained and descriptions of the resulting early stages are given. This paper draws attention to the fact that most British publications have attributed to U uliginosalis the larval description and foodplants of U alpinalis ([Denis & Schiffermuller], 1775), derived from continental European sources, and considers these accounts.
