Granitic rocks show a variety of engineeringproperties that may affect quarrying operations, tunneling, mining,slope stability and the use of rock as a construction material. Thephysical and mechanical properties are a function of themineralogical and textural characteristics of the rock. Thepurpose of this study is to apply correlation analysis toinvestigate the relationships between petrographical andengineering properties of granitic rocks. A variety of granitic rocksamples from different parts of Turkey were subjected topetrographic studies. The same samples were then tested todetermine specific gravity, dry and saturated unit weight, waterabsorption, effective and total porosity, sonic velocity, Schmidthardness, point load strength index, uniaxial compressive strength,tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. The relationshipsbetween these properties and the petrographical characteristicsare described by simple regression analyses. The study revealedthat the influence of the textural characteristics on theengineering properties appears to be more important than themineralogy. It also determined that the types of contacts, grain(mineral) shape and size significantly influence the engineeringproperties of the granitic rocks.
