To maximize the asset value of Dofasco's No. 4 blast furnace, the focus has been on leveraging people, operating excellence and technology. This strategy has proved to be very successful in operating at high production levels of 4,850-5,000 nthm/day with two tapholes. The developments in preventive maintenance and operating practices have led to increased taphole reliability, thus optimizing two-sided casting. To meet a long-term initiative of a 20-year campaign and eliminate or defer taphole repairs, further improvements are being made. These include the mudgun and drills, taphole maintenance, day-to-day operation and development of long-term strategies.
