Breakup of the firewall between the B and C modules of the Piper Alpha platform-II. Analysis by finite elements and comparison with hand calculation

In the Piper Alpha disaster, the initial explosion inmodule C destroyed the firewall between modules C and B, andfragments caused secondary damage which led to a fire. Thispaper describes the dynamic finite-element analysis by OASYSDYNA3D of the explosion response of the firewall, andcompares the results with those from a hand calculationdescribed in an earlier paper.
