U.S. Production, Capability Utilization, Imports and Inventories

Output from U.S. steel mills reached an estimated 1,856,000 tons during the week ending 15 November 2013, as mills operated at roughly 78% of overall capability. Compared to the week prior, production was 1.5% higher. Production was 3.6% above the level of a year earlier (Figure 1). Mills in the Great Lake region produced 668,000 tons and output in the Southern region reached 655,000 tons during the week ending 15 November 2013. Production totaled 250,000 tons in the Midwest, 203,000 tons in the North East and 80,000 tons in the Western region, according to data from the American Iron and Steel Institute.
