Enhancing the Operation of Highly Varying Industrial Loads to Increase Electric Reliability, Quality and Economics

摘要

The general goal of this work is to develop methods to increase electric reliability and quality, as well as increase industrial productivity and energy utilization by reducing the electric fluctuations caused by large industrial loads. This methodology coordinates the startup of large loads so that they tend to cancel out the electric transients from each other, while at the same time providing techniques that can be used to enhance various industrial processes. In addition to reducing electric system transients, economic and regulatory aspects of the operation are also being considered as part of the development of an optimal operational design. Such an approach can lead to a basis of cooperation for the industrial operator and the operator of the electric grid, for mutual benefit. Such mutual benefit includes cost savings, increased productivity, improved energy utilization, improved power quality, improved reliability, and improved compliance with NERC operating requirements. The procedures and practices suggested by this research are being coordinated with the operations personnel at operating steel facilities to assure that the developed technology can be implemented in the field.
