摘要

This work presents an integrated approach to the detection of radioactive sources before they can be charged into an electric arc furnace (EAF). Radioactive sources hidden within the scrap stream present a great threat to a steel mill or scrap yard. Encountering a source within the scrap can result in a health issue, a contamination issue (both industrial and environmental), as well as an economic consequence. To provide better protection against a source entering the feedstock at a steel plant, a multi-layered defense-in-depth approach is employed to minimize the possibility of a source being melted.
