Understanding and developing ways of controlling the corrosion of the coolant piping, tanks and mill housings has been a recent focus at the cold mills of ArcelorMittal North America. The evidence of corrosion is known to the mills, and has generally been considered to be relatively uncontrollable, on a fine scale, and an inevitable result of the process itself. The severity often becomes apparent after routine wash-down of the mill stands. Pitting can generally be observed on various portions of the mill housing, wiper boxes, roll chocks and piping. The question that arises then is if the pitting is more severe than what was observed in the past.
