A report from the British consulting firm MEPS predicts world steel production reaching a record 1350 million tonnes this year. If attained, this year's global steel production figure would be a 14 percent increase from last year's total figure and a further increase of 3.9 percent is expected in the year 2011. Meanwhile, Blast furnace iron production is predicted to reach a record level of 994 million tonnes this year. Production increases are expected to continue into 2011. The previous peak year for global iron and steelmaking occurred in 2007 when global steel production reached almost 1345 million tonnes.
