A funding boost from the Universities and Science Minister, David Willetts, is being used to create over 90 new engineering and physical sciences Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) across 30 UK universities, with a proportion of these dedicated to energy research. The £350mn investment, made late 2013, will see the first students start their studies in September 2014. The CDT programme includes both technical and transferable skills training, as well as a research element equivalent to a traditional PhD. What makes a CDT unique is that it brings together researchers from diverse areas of expertise to provide a supportive and collaborative environment for students.
