Economic Benefits of Producing DRI to Displace Purchased Scrap in the BOF

Direct reduced iron (DRI) can be used at an integrated steel works in the blast furnace (BF) or basic oxygen furnace (BOF). In this paper, DRI and hot briquetted iron (HBI) are used interchangeably. As dem onstrated by AK Steel, DRI can be added to the BF to reduce coke consumption and increase hot metal output. Excess down stream steelmaking, casting and rolling capacity is needed to realize the value of the extra hot metal produced and to jus tify the cost of the DRI addition. Adding DRI to the BF while keeping steel production con stant typically results in a higher operating cost.
