The choice of the most suitable paint system is determined by its usage and expected performance, particularly of the top coat. Pigment, Resin, Solvent and Additives as constituents decide various properties of a paint. For example inorganic pigment results in dull colour, high UV and chemical resistance as opposed to the bright colours and less UV resistant of organic pigments. UV resistance also means that colour fading will take place at a much lower rate. Other constituents along with the painting technology effects the performance of painted steel with respect to chipping, cracking, peeling, resistance to impact from hail, etc. Each of the constituent must be chosen very carefully for the final film performance and the resulting cost. Depending on the constituents, paint used in the roof, gutter and downpipe components, makes it usable or otherwise for water harvesting from such a system.
