Steel exports drop 25 percent in April-July, imports on 20 percent high

Following government's imposition of export duty on several steel products with a view to keep the prices under control and check inflation; the country's steel export in the April-July period of current year, dipped about 25 percent to 2.75 mt. However, import during the same period imports have escalated over 20 percent to 3.5mt, thereby increasing the domestic steel supplies by nearly 1.5 mt. PK Rastogi, Steel Secretary said, "the improved domestic availability owing to a dip in export is a positive development and it has helped the consumer industries."
