More than one third of the overall world steel production is currently produced in Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) (Figure 1),. However, between the years 1995 and 2000,118 new AC- and 68 DC-EAF-steel plants were put into service, compared with only 15 Basic Oxygen Furnaces (BOF)-steel plants in the same period of time, most of them in China and India (Figure 2)P The development of UHP-technology and the introduction of the Direct Reduction concept were important developments promoting the use of arc furnaces. At the same time new technologies such as CONARC-furnaces and the operation of additional burners and injection lances in electric furnaces have further increased the importance of highly productive electric steel making.
