As a member of the Siemens VAI since April 2004, Siemens VAI Finland Ltd. has been responsible for the sales and marketing of cokemaking technology and automation within the Group. Formerly known as Rautaruukki Engineering, Siemens VAI, Finland has over 40 years of experience in design, planning, projecting and development of automation and process technology in the iron and steel industry in more than 30 countries worldwide. The experience and know-how of Siemens VAI, Finland in cokemaking technology and automation covers the entire coking process area from the coal handling and coke battery process, through to coke quenching and coke by-product processing. Together with its cooperation partners, Siemens VAI, Finland has executed large-scale projects; from the rebuilding, revamping and modernization of an existing plant to the construction of a total plant. Environmentally sustainable development is an important issue in coke production today. Pollutants arc an inevitable by-product of the coking process. With good plant design and operation, however, emissions can be cut to low levels or eliminated altogether. It is also advantageous to achieve better coke quality for blast furnace operations. In this paper, several technologies and systems represented by Siemens VAI, Finland are introduced, all of which have proved to result in cokemaking plants with economic and environmentally-friendly operations.
