The freeze lining concept for blast furnaces was introduced to the North American market in the middle of the last century. Over the years, it has proven to be a more reliable, safer and a more economical lining solution than "conventional" linings comprised of large carbon blocks. Fig 1 shows the 39 blast furnaces in operation in North America 2002. All but one has true freeze hearth linings. That only furnace is the one having continuous hearth problems.
