The development and production of new steel grades with a unique combination of strength, toughness and formability, as well as the implementation of new technologies (e.g., thin-slab casting and direct rolling, strip casting) call for special solutions related to online cooling equipment. Innovations in cooling equipment are thus a major issue in hot rolling and focus on achieving, for example, high cooling rates- as applied in plate cooling -and tighter temperature-deviation tolerances along the length and width of the strip. Examples of innovative VAI cooling solutions applied in hot rolling are outlined in this paper.
