Danieli slab caster at Thyssen Krupp Stahl, Beeckerwerth, Germany

In May 2001, Thyssen Krupp Stahl's SGA2 slab caster at the Beeckerwerth plant in Duisburg was shut down to be replaced by a new unit of Danieli design. The old machine was a 2-strand curved caster with a main radius of 12 m and 14 segments in each strand. Slab thickness and width were 255 mm and 1420 to 2400 mm respectively. The product mix is wide and currently includes low carbon steels (IF and ULC grades included), peritectic steels, medium and high carbon steels, and microalloyed, silicon and electrical steel grades. The main objectives of this project were: a better internal cleanliness for the IF steel grade for deep drawing applications by changing the old curved design to a vertical-bending design; an increase in productivity by up to 240,000 t/month by raising the casting speed from 1.15 m/min to 1.35 m/min as a result of adding 4 new segments in the horizontal part. Namely, after revamping, any problem of inclusion entrapment that is typical of curved design, had to be removed. Since steel cleanliness can be guaranteed in a caster mainly by allowing the inclusions in the molten steel floating towards the meniscus and then trapping them in the bath of molten powder, the longer the time available for this to happen, the better the result obtained.
