A 161-Mw cogeneration plant at U.S. steel, Gary works

Since 1926, the Gary Works of U.S. Steel has operated a 60-Mw, 25-Hz electrical generating system, fueled by blast furnace and coke-oven gases. The system supplied process steam and heating steam to the works. A plant-wide energy balance, completed in 1995, revealed that modern, high-efficiency equipment could produce up to 43% of the plant's electrical requirements compared to the 16% of the mill's electrical needs. Based on the subsequent commercial evaluation, U.S. Steel approved a project in Sept. 1995, to construct and commission a 161-Mw, 60-Hz cogeneration facility.
