A total quality steel challenge: non-conformities < 2 percent with 40 Euro/ton reduction in total production cash cost

A BS-Luna, the world's first ECR~R Endless Casting Rolling speciality steel plant, in operation in Italy since autumn 2000, marked the beginning of a new era in the production of speciality steel long products. The 500,000-tpy plant produces continuously-rolled and in-line heat-treated 20 to 100-mm-dia round bars, 40 to 100-mm square bars and 15 to 50-mm-dia bar-in-coils, in specialty and stainless steel qualities. One of the main innovations of ABS Luna, along with the possibility of endless rolling directly from liquid steel for a wide range of steel grades, is the possibility to perform on-line heat treatments, eliminating or substantially reducing subsequent off-line treatments for both straight and bar-in- coils. On-line heat treatments are performed through the combination of several innovativeprocesses during hot rolling at the mill, or immediately after the finishing stand or at mill's finishing outlets. More specifically: LTR-Low Temperature Rolling takes place
