Salem Steel registers highest performance in 2002-03/Sets challenging targets for 2003-04

Salem Steel Plant, the special steels unit of Steel Authority of India Ltd, has achieved significant performance during the year 2002-03, establishing new monthly as well as annual records in production, sales and equipment utilisation. Stainless steel slab rolling in hot rolling mill during the year 2002-03 was also the highest so far. The plant also received state awards for its high degree of safety standards put in place. Several measures have been initiated by the plant to combat the adverse effects of recession during the past two years. The measures that contributed most to improve performance during 2002-03 include: Market driven production of thinner gauges of both hot rolled and cold rolled products. Production of new carbon steel grades to increase market share. Enhancing equipment utilisation by undertaking hire rolling of slabs to HR coils and annealed and pickled coils.
