Walnut shell filtration for oil and solids removal from steel mill recycle systems

Results revealed that use of walnut shells offers improved performance, even with feed conditions exceeding 300 mg/l total suspended solids and 30 mg/l of oil and solids. Walnut shell filters offer an alternative to conventional sand filters for treating water from hot forming operations. With a high capacity for oil and grease, pilot tests of walnut shell filters have been demonstrated to perform well on high suspended solids concentrations. In addition, walnut shell filters offer cost savings to treat an equivalent volume of waste-water with a smaller footprint.
