摘要

Tar resin bonded trough mass or runner mass are still in use in some medium and large steel plants in India. The traditionally tar resin bonded trough mass are still very much in use in plants such as Durgapur, Tisco etc., it was in Vishakapatnam steel plant that such tar free trough masses have been in use for a long time. Tar based trough mass contain some toxic material whose gas emission during curing is environmentally hazardous and are not safe for the blast furnace workers at site. High carcinogenicity of benzopyrene (10 to 13000 ppm) are hazardous to human health.Coal tar can be replaced by hard pitch, owing to its unique property (high coke residue) and the presence in it of anisotropic coke, with high resistance to oxidation, high thermal plasticity and elastic property. It is also widely used in runner castable material. Phenolic resin are also the main binder in trough mass applications. Removal of dehydrated coal tar as binding material makes the blast furnace trough mass more eco-friendly. In this study, we have used a chemical - ceramic bond which have equivalent or better property than dehydrated coal tar. The results of this study has been presented in this paper.
