Global demand for electricity is growing. In addition to overall demand growing, the amount of energy we use during times of peak demand-typically the hottest days of summer and the coldest days of winter-is also growing, and these spikes are usually the most expensive and have the biggest environmental impact. By 2035, electricity demand is expected to grow by 49% globally, according to the International Energy Agency's International Energy Outlook 2010. While energy costs are volatile, over the long term, the EIA data suggests that the challenge of rising energy costs is not likely to fade away anytime soon.
