800 kV HVDC link for China, 2,375 km link planned for Brazil

The world's first 800 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link has started operation in China. The link, which has a transmission capacity of 5 GW and will cover a distance of 1,400 km between Yunnan and Guangdong, has been built by Siemens for the utility China Southern Power Grid. The first pole is operating, and commissioning of the second pole and thus start-up of the entire system is scheduled for mid-2010, according to Siemens.
