What if we could link the operation and outputs of 36 decentralised renewables plants into one entity?Three German companies are experimenting with this 'virtual' power plant idea, suggesting that, properly controlled, distributed power can replace both fossil fuels and nuclear power - with massively reduced outputs of carbon dioxide. The joint project, said to be as reliable and powerful as a conventional large-scale power station, supplies electricity around the clock regardless of weather conditions and electricity demand. It takes advantage of the unequally distributed energy potential across Germany and of a permanently stored source of solar energy - biomass.
