European carbon market 'will remain oversupplied until 2027'

The European carbon market is likely to remain oversupplied with allowances until 2027, according to forecasts from market analysis provider Thomson Reuters Point Carbon, which predicts a ten-year wait until market prices rebound. The company's central forecasts, which are based on the assumption that the EU will take on a greenhouse gas reduction target of 40% by 2030, predict that the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) will have an accumulated oversupply in the carbon market of 2.5 gigatonnes in 2020. The market is expected to be short on an annual basis after this, which will erode the oversupply until 2027.
