Energy & Utility Skills (EU Skills) is the sector skills council for the gas, power, waste managennent and water industries. For gas, EU Skills is focused upon the skills agenda for both the utilisation, as well as the transmission and distribution of the fuel. The utilisation sector alone employs 124,000 people and the key skills developments here relate to improving energy usage and efficiency through increased use of energy efficient appliances and controls. For the power sector, which employs around 87,000 people, EU Skills covers activities associated with the generation, national transmission and local distribution of electricity, up to and including, the customer's meter. By 2024, the power sector will need to have recruited around 35,000 new employees and increased the availability of quality education and skills providers by almost 80% in order to adequately skill these new people, says EU Skills. This is as well as up-skilling existing staff.
