US Government to become more sustainable, California sets energy targets

US President Barack Obama has signed an executive order which sets sustain-ability goals for US government agencies and focuses on making improvements to their energy, environmental and economic performance. The order requires the agencies to set greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets for 2020, as well as to: · reduce their vehicle fleet petroleum use by 30% by 2020; · design all new government buildings to achieve net-zero energy use by 2030; · improve their water efficiency by 26% by 2020; · minimise their buildings' impacts on storm water runoff; · recycle or divert 50% of their waste by 2015; and · meet sustainability requirements in 95% of all applicable contracts. The executive order follows Obama's proclamation of October as National Energy Awareness Month - calling on US citizens to make clean energy choices highlighting the sustainability and economic benefits.
