Exotic diseases in pets returning to Ireland

As a student seeing practice, I remember being told by a vet, "I've never seen rabies, but I can guarantee you that I wouldn't miss it if it came through the door!" It's a statement worth taking on board. While rabies may be the most serious and obvious exotic diseases, there are other diseases of variable virulence not on the 'notifiable' list that companion animals might bring into Ireland. Some of these are transmissible to humans. Since the holiday season is approaching, a brief refresher on several of the diseases that can be imported from Continental Europe and the USA is worthwhile.
