To LED or not to LED? That is no longer the question -certainly for most UK local authorities when it comes to the provision of a modern, low energy and controllable street lighting service. After a somewhat slow start - capital investment costs and crime concerns being to the fore - LED (light emitting diode) street lighting is finally coming of age as the soon-to-be major component of the country's 7.4mn street lights. So what's the driver? After a first pilot scheme in London back in 2009, why are local authorities throughout the UK and indeed the world, now coming around to taking the plunge? The number one nudge factor is almost certainly rising energy costs.
