How long to end fossil fuels?

I first heard talk of the end of the fossil fuels era' about 20 years ago at a London energy conference; it seemed radical then, hardly less so now. Now the leaders of the planet's seven most powerful nations have, apparently, scheduled the phase-out of fossil fuel use by the end of this century - see the news story on page 5. The era only began during the 18th century as the industrial revolution got going.
