Has China's appetite for coal peaked?

Coal use in China fell in 2014 for the first time this century, yet the country still grew its economy. Poor air quality is driving China to assess its energy options. Data from the Chinese government show that Chinese coal use fell by 2.9% in 2014 compared to the previous year. This is despite an increase in total coal-power capacity in 2014. Other energy sources increased their output, especially hydro and nuclear, and overall the Chinese economy grew by 7.4%.
