Lithium-ion polymer cells employing a carbonanode, a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE), and a lithium cobaltoxide cathode were assembled, and their charge-discharge cyclingcharacteristics were investigated. Gel polymer electrolytes wereprepared by encapsulating an organic electrolyte solution in anacrylonitrile-methyl methacrylate-styrene terpolymer. A smallamount of γ-butyrolactone was added to a gel polymerelectrolyte containing an LiBF4-ethylene carbonate-dimethylcarbonate electrolyte solution in order to improve the GPE ionicconductivity. Results showed a significant enhancement in ratecapability, whereas cycling efficiency and cyclability were little changed.
