The transfer of salicylate ion at a polypyrrole-modified electrode during redox switching has been studied by acombined electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM)and probe beam deflection (PBD) technique. The gravimetric andoptical responses indicate an exchange process involving asuccessive two-stage ion exchange process in which sodium iontransfer in one direction precedes salicylate ion transfer in theopposite direction. During film reduction, sodium ions enter thepolymer prior to salicylate ion release. A comparison of thepredicted PBD profile, with that of the measured beam defectionresponse, calculated by temporal convolution of the currentsignal, indicates that neutral species, including salt, accompanyanion release during film reduction.
