Sensitive Amperometric NO Sensor Using LaGaO_3-Based Oxide Ion Conducting Electrolyte

A solid-state amperometric NO sensor was investigated. High sensitivity was observed with the sensor consisting of La_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)MnO_3 and La_(0.4)Sr_(0.6)Mn_(0.8)Ni_(0.2)O_3 as inactive and active electrodes to NO oxidation, respectively, and La_(0.8)Sr_(0.2)Ga_(0.8)Mg_(0.1)Ni_(0.1)O_3 as electrolyte. The sensor characteristics were studied in the temperature range 773-973 K and the highest sensitivity was found above 1800 mu A/decade at 823 K. Because the current output of this sensor was little affected by coexisting gases, e.g., CO, H_2, C_3H_6, CO_2, H_2O, and NO_2, it is expected that this sensor can detect NO in exhaust gas selectively.
