Russia's Rosneft paid homage to a host of Western "friends and partners" when it announced a discovery in the Arctic Kara Sea at the weekend, among them US supermajor Exxon Mobil and oil-field services giants Schlumberger, Halliburton, Weatherford and Baker Hughes. But as Exxon, granted a short extension beyond the original Sep. 26 deadline to halt Kara Sea drilling in order comply with US sanctions on Russia, winds down its joint venture with Rosneft, it is unclear how much longer the Russian firm will be able to count on the support of its Western services teams, too (EIF Sep.24' 14).
