摘要

The volume fractin of solids corresponding to infinite viscosity of the suspension ((phi)_m) has been studied for binary mixtures of rapidly settling solids containing coarse and fine particles of same density. The quantitative effect of adding different amounts of fines to the coarse on phi_m has been expressed by means of an empirical correlation of the type phi_m = A (1-x_f)~(a1) where both A and a_1 are depend on the relevant parameters characteristics of the systems, for example, the dia ratio between the coarse and fines (d_1/d_2), the specific gravity of the solids, (SG) and the bulk density ratio between the coarse and fines (rho_B1/rho_B2) and can be expressed by A = 0.6089 (d_1/d_2)~0.011 (SG)~(-0.813) (rho_B1/rho_B2)~(-1.,254) and a_1 = 0.2786 (d_1/d_2)~(0.739) (SG)~(-2.264) (rho_B1/rho_B2)~(21.428) to give a standard deviation of + 5.44 for 144 experimental data on phi_m. The ranges of the parameters considered are 0.1605 < = phi_m < = 0.352; 1.280 < = d_1/d_2 < = 4.739; 2.61 < = SG < = 4.93; 0.979 < = rho_B1/rho_B < = 1.113.
