In last year's Conveyor Design report (E&MJ, June 2009, pp. 54-61) Norbert Becker, Siemens Mining Technologies' vice president for process solutions, stated "belt conveyors have proven to be the most efficient method of moving bulk solids in mining operations. In recent years, system designs have become more complicated than ever through increasing length between the axes on long-distance belt conveyors, higher belt speeds, and more challenging routes with horizontal and vertical curves." Despite these challenges, "No other transportation medium comes close to the cost effectiveness of belt conveyors for transporting large amounts of bulk material over long distances," he concluded.
